Thomas Sutton took the first color photo in 1861. He used the three-color method suggested by James Clerk Maxwell in 1855: red, green, and blue filters were used to create the colored image. In the middle of the 19th century, color photography was an exclusive technique, only affordable by a small circle of people.

Nowadays, almost everyone has a phone camera, which can take great color shots. Still, lots of people also have old black-and-white photos like wedding pictures, family photos, or even historic army portraits. Have you ever wanted to colorize old photos and see exactly how people looked a century or more ago? With modern technologies, you can easily add color to these photos and gain a deeper understanding of the past. Read on if you want to know how to colorize photos in a couple of clicks.

First of all, you’ll need a photo-editing app to colorize black-and-white photos. We recommend using Movavi Photo Editor to convert black-and-white to color.
